The youth bail amendment act began on 2 May 2016. The Act is significant for children, since it acknowledges that adults are different to children, and should be treated differently when it comes to bail. A larger number of children than ever have been arrested and remanded (triple the number of 2012 for those aged between 10 and 14), and arrested and charged, requiring bail.
