Victoria introduces new police pursuits policy

The new Victoria Police Pursuits Policy addresses the public danger that is a consequence of police chases, which are not really necessary considering the breadth of options available to investigators.

In 2014 the Coroner released a report showing that 10 deaths had arisen from policy pursuits between 2012 and 2013. Amendments were made so that police pursuits are only to be initiated when there is an urgent need to apprehend a vehicle because of a serious risk to public health or safety; a criminal offence has been committed, or is about to be committed, which involves serious injury to a person; and, alternative means for tracking down the occupants of the vehicle are not feasible.

The new policy applies from July 2015.
