Defamation is the situation whereby one person causes damage to another person’s reputation via publishing information about them that influences the way others view that person.
What defamation can include:
- Drawings, talking, writing, photographs or blogs
- You don’t even have to mention the person’s name
- Defamation can occur without the intention to do so
- Once taken to court, the defamer can be forced to publicly apologise or compensate their victim with money
- Those taken to court can defend themselves by proving the truth of their statements or showing the opinion was honest
- Court cases for defamation are usually expensive and time consuming, so legal advice is advisable for both defendants and accusers
