There is a lot of research that backs our court systems and child custody arrangements. This means that equal custody arrangements are just not in the best interests of certain age groups, particularly babies. They need a primary carer to bond to, so they become secure, confident kids and adults.
The orders put in place will take your child’s age into consideration. There are other obvious considerations that are used in conjunction with the child’s age, like the family circumstances and individual maturity of the child.
Age development and how we care for our kids
Babies
Babies are believed to need a primary carer (as in, at least one steady parent), spending short periods of time with the non-custodial parent.
About age two
Two-year-old children can tolerate up to one night away from their primary carer, though each child enters this phase at a different time. About two times per week – not two days in a row – the child can be away from his or her primary carer.
About age five
Kids of about five – school-age – can tolerate three or four nights with each parent, meaning this is a good time to introduce equal care arrangements.
About age 10
Kids can handle and enjoy week-about arrangements.
