What does workplace bullying consist of?
Bullying takes many forms, and can be verbal, physical, social or psychological.
- Being intimidated, manipulated, offended, degraded, humiliated
- Being criticised outside of your performance
- Being isolated or excluded from co-workers
- Having information withheld from you that you need to do your job
- Being forced to do menial tasks, or having responsibility removed from your position
Bullying is not
- A one-off occurrence
- Behaviour that does not create a health and safety risk
- Differences in opinion or approach
- Reasonable actions by management carried out in a reasonable manner
Workplace discrimination
Discrimination at work is slightly different to bullying, and means certain things at certain times.
- An employer can’t use interview questions to determine something about a person, for example if women are planning on having children.
- You can’t refuse to employ someone based on their race or religion.
- You can’t have unfair conditions, for example excluding people with wheelchairs or other physical aids from the office.
- Refuse or limit promotions, transfers or other benefits due to a personal characteristic.
- Terminate employment due to certain reasons, e.g. pregnancy or disability.
