A motorised scooter or a wheeled recreational device has its own rules it must abide by when using the road, bike path, or a footpath in Victoria, Australia. A wheeled recreational device is a scooter, skateboard, roller blades or roller skates. A wheeled recreational device is NOT a bike, golf buggie, pram, stroller, trolley, wheelchair, wheeled toy or a scooter that is considered a motor vehicle (200 watts or more).
Wheeled recreational devices
- You cannot use these devices on separated bike paths, but you can use on footpaths
- Do not use on a road with dividing lines or median strips
- Do not use on roads with a speed limit of more than 50km per hour
- Do not use on the road at night except to cross the road (does not apply to scooters provided other rules are followed)
- Do not be towed or use in the slipstream of another vehicle
- Do not use where there is a No Wheeled Recreational Devices or Toys sign
- Do not use motorised skateboards, roller skates or roller blades on public roads, footpaths or nature strips. You can use on private property.
- Scooters must follow the rules for wheeled recreational devices and wear an approved helmet, have one working brake, a bell, and lights at night
- Foot scooters and motorised scooters differ
