A power-assisted bicycle is classified more or less the same as a regular bicycle, since they both have similar characteristics. They are not required to be registered nor for the rider to be licensed.
The definitions you should be aware of:
- A pedal bike that has one or more motors attached with power output not exceeding 200 watts
- A bike certified as a Pedalec (a European bike) that has output of no more than 250 watts and has top power restricted at 25km/h, with rider pedalling to access power (as of 2012 law changes)
- It is NOT considered a power-assisted bike if a person can ride it without pedalling
- Power output is greater than 200 watts or 250 watts for a Pedalec
